Clubs & Activities
Clubs
You may join any of the clubs by signing up at the first meeting. Most activities meet weekly throughout the year. The club advisor will provide the details about the schedule.
Most activities also meet from 2:35 p.m. to 3:25 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, with exceptions noted in the descriptions. Late buses are available, leaving at 3:30 p.m., for those who are eligible for bus transportation.
We encourage you to get involved in the activity of your choice and remain committed to the experience.
Art Club
The Art club is available for students who are interested in further developing skills learned in art class. Wide ranges of projects are offered, such as painting, printmaking, paper mache, and other materials. The Art club engages in activities that are not part of the regular visual arts curriculum.
Brain Busters
Bergen Brain Busters gives our middle school students the opportunity to compete in a challenging academic competition that allows them to use their academic ability and critical thinking skills to answer questions from all areas of the middle school curriculum. Two teams from each school compete in a series of playoff rounds. The teams with the highest scores from the playoffs will compete in the semi-final and final rounds. This club, like others, requires dedication and commitment through preparation and competition.
The club is open to any interested sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students. Sixth-grade students benefit from the exposure of the trivia questions and procedures of the game. Only seventh and eighth-grade students are eligible to compete in the competitions. There are several try-outs throughout the year for club members to determine who will participate in the monthly meets.
Cultural Connection
This club is open to all grade levels and is for anyone interested in learning more about the diverse cultural backgrounds that make up our school community. Meetings are dedicated to activities that educate students about cultural issues, and our goal is to appreciate diversity while at the same time celebrating what we have in common as human beings.
Math Counts
The Math Counts club is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers, and its competition is designed to challenge middle school students. It provides them with the opportunity to go “head-to-head” against their peers from other schools, cities, and even states if they progress to the National Competition. Students involved with Math Counts work diligently with their peers and the club advisor solving challenging math problems as they prepare for the regional Math Counts competition at Bergen Community College.
REACT Club
The mission of Junior Rotary club (REACT) is to promote goodwill, understanding, and world peace through the active participation of its members, so that, with committed citizenship and effective leadership, they may improve the quality of life throughout the world.
School Musical
This club is open to students in all grades. There is a place for everyone who wants to be a part of this exciting and challenging group. Students who join the musical will have the opportunity to sing, act, and dance on stage. Non-performers may join as members of the stage crew (7th/8th grade only), tech crew, costume crew, and scenery crew. Auditions for performers are at the end of October. Students and their parents must sign a contract in which they agree to follow the rehearsal schedule and attend all rehearsals and performances. The students will receive a full rehearsal schedule before they audition for the show.
School Musical/Backstage Support
This club is open to all grade levels. Its meetings and activities focus solely on constructing and creating the scenery and props for the West Brook musical, as well as assisting with lighting and backstage support.
Ski Club
The Ski club is designed to give 6th through 8th-grade students an opportunity to learn and experience a winter sport that you can enjoy for many years. No skiing experience or equipment is necessary to join. Preparation begins in October and the season lasts as long as the snow. The club arranges supervision, lessons, and rentals at Mountain Creek. The ski trips are on evenings of school days, five trips in total. Think snow!
Student Council
The Student Council is the voice and decision-making organization for students. At regular meetings throughout the year, the students can make their voices heard through their representatives. The student council sponsors many school-wide activities, such as asset building, service learning activities, and fundraisers.
Student Newspaper
This club provides an opportunity for students interested in creative writing, art, and business to put together a newspaper featuring school events. Assignments include interviews and “covering” in-school and co-curricular events.
TV Club
This club is available to all students to televise the daily announcements and produce special features about our school. The action will take place in our TV studio located in the back of the media center. There are exciting positions available in front of and behind the camera.
Yearbook
The Yearbook club works on the production of a book that serves as a lasting memento of your years at West Brook. The staff works throughout the year both during and after school. Positions on the staff are open to any seventh or eighth-grade student.
Young Astronauts
This club will be of interest to those who enjoy science, especially rocketry and space. The first half of the year is devoted to training for our trip to the Buehler Challenger and Science Center, where we will fly a simulated space mission called Rendezvous Comet Halley. During the second half of the year, young astronauts will discover the principles of flight and apply this knowledge to building and launching their own rocket.
Flute Choir
The Flute Choir is a select group offered to accomplished flute players, to assist them in developing their skills, and to give students an opportunity to play in a group setting.
String Ensemble
The String Ensemble gives a select group of advanced string players the opportunity to play as a chamber group. They will improve in their skills such as sight-reading, harmonization, and improvisation. This group performs in community functions as well as school presentations.
Jazz Band
The Jazz Band is a select group offered to students grades 5 through 8. The goal is to introduce students to the different types of jazz styles. Members will become familiar with jazz rhythms and articulations. The ensemble performs at the winter concert, spring select concert, and community events.
Respect Club
This club, for grades seven and eight, fosters an inclusive climate that celebrates our colorful student body. It promotes confidence and pride in what makes us richly diverse. Students will explore general topics and plan school-wide educational events celebrating our diversity.
Treps Club
Treps, short for entrepreneurs, is a project-based learning program that teaches students how to start their own business. They learn the lessons in the after school workshops and apply them at home as they build their businesses. The final project is a marketplace where the students get to sell their products. This club is offered for grades five through eight.
Intramural Sports
- Volleyball
- Volleyball will give students the opportunity to sharpen their skills while competing on teams.
- Basketball - Boys and Girls
These separate programs are open to students who would like to sharpen their playing skills while competing on grade level teams. Games will be after school from November through March. - Floor Hockey
This program provides an opportunity for students to sharpen their hockey skills in a competitive team arrangement. Games are in the gym after school. - Intramural Sports Clubs Participation Form
